The Day - Pfizer site leader cites ongoing COVID-19 work - News from southeastern Connecticut

Groton The site leader at the Pfizer Inc. labs here says about 200 colleagues locally have been so focused on developing a vaccine to battle COVID-19, it s only now sinking in that they were part of a historic effort over the past year that likely saved millions of lives. I think we re only now starting to reflect, said John Burkhardt, a senior vice president at Pfizer who runs the company s largest research and development center in Groton, in a phone interview March 5. When you re going through this, you get this laser-like focus on delivery. This polio-like neurological disease mainly affects children, causing muscle weakness and, in some cases, permanent paralysis and even death.

By Gwladys Fouche and Terje Solsvik OSLO (Reuters) - Three health workers in Norway who had recently received the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine are being treated in hospital for bleeding, blood clots and a low count of blood platelets, Norwegian health authorities said on Saturday. Norway halted the rollout of the AstraZeneca vaccine on Thursday, following a similar move by Denmark. Iceland later followed suit. We do not know if the cases are linked to the vaccine, Sigurd Hortemo, a senior doctor at the Norwegian Medicines Agency told a news conference held jointly with the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. All three individuals were under the age of 50. The European medicine regulator, the European Medicines Agency (EMA,) would investigate the three incidents, Hortemo said. They have very unusual symptoms: bleeding, blood clots and a low count of blood platelets, Steinar Madsen, Medical Director at the Norwegian Medicines Agency told broadcaster NRK.
